DIY Recycled Re-useable shopping bags – A fun way to recycle

DIY Shopping Bag

In this week’s eco-initiative, we’ll show you how you can a recycled, reusable diy shopping bag. It’s a great way to reuse household materials and helps you save money!

Step 1. Gather Your Materials

The first step in making your coin bank is gathering the necessary materials. We made sure to use materials that are commonly found around the house.

You Will Need:

  • A T-shirt
  • Scissors
  • A glue gun or sewing machine

Step 1. Find a T-shirt

We chose to use an old Red Cross T-shirt, but you can use any cotton t-shirt. Other materials will work, but we have found that the stretchy nature of cotton helps prevent the bag from ripping during use.

When in doubt, use someone else's shirt!

Step 2. Lose the Sleeves

To make the handles for the reusable shopping bag, first cut off the sleeves of the T-shirt. For those of you reading this guide in order to learn how to make any shirt instantly more fashionable, you can stop reading here!

If you want to look good all the time, do this to all of your T-shirts!

Step 3. Keep Cutting

In this step, you will need to cut the shirt so that there is a 2 inch border on either side, and approximately 9 inch handles for the bag. Remember that the shirt will stretch when being used to carry objects, so air on the conservative side when cutting.

We made the handles a little too long.

Step 4. Attach the Bottom

Now that the shirt is cut to the correct shape, you will need to attach the piece you just cut out of the shirt to the opening at the bottom of the shirt to serve as the bottom of the bag. We did this by applying hot glue around the border of each piece and holding them together, but sewing the two pieces together is much better for long-term use.

Attach the two pieces

Step 5. Go Shopping!

With the bottom attached correctly, your bag is now ready for use.

You Will Need:

  • A Plastic Bottle
  • Scissors
  • A glue gun
  • Tissue Paper
  • Felt

Empty Bottle

Step 2. Prepare the Bottle

To prepare your bottle for its transformation into a coin bank, just remove the label and wash off any glue or residue that remains on the bottle. It is also a good idea to rinse and dry the inside of the bottle to prevent having a bottle full of sticky coins.

Step 3. Make The Coin Slot

This step is so easy a caveman could do it. Just cut a small slot for coins using a scalpel or other suitable utensil. The slot should be big enough to allow coins to freely enter the coin bank, but not so large that coins may fall out if the coin bank is tipped over.

Be careful not to cut your fingers!

Covered Bottle

Step 4. Cover the Bottle

With the bottle prepared and the coin slot ready, cover the bottle in tissue paper. This will serve as a base for which to apply other decorations

Step 5. It’s Time to Decorate

Now that you have prepared your coin bank, all that’s left is to decorate it. We used felt to make a recycling superhero that helps you save your money.

Finished!
