How to Make a DIY Cell Phone Pouch From Newspaper

In this week’s eco-initiative, we’ll show you how you can turn your newspaper into a fantastic looking – phone defending pouch. All of the materials you will need can be found in the common household, so read more to find out how you can make one for yourself!

Step 1. Gather Your Materials

The first step in making your cell phone pouch is gathering all of the materials you will need. We made sure to use materials that are commonly found around the house.

You Will Need:

  • A newspaper
  • Scissors
  • Clear packing tape
  • A straight edge
  • A button

Everything you need

Our button is already sewn to a small piece of fabric. If yours isn’t, either find one that is, or make it so.

Use your straight edge to keep the lines straight

Step 2. Create Your Outline

Making the outline for your cell phone pouch is simple! Place your cell phone onto the newspaper that you are using to make your cell phone pouch, and draw a straight line approximately one inch from both sides of your phone. Be careful to not make your outline too narrow or your phone might not fit!

Step 3. Cut Along the Lines

This step is so easy a caveman could do it. Just cut along the outlined lines you made in the previous step. Make sure to cut evenly along all of the pages of the newspaper, you will want the edge to be as even as possible.

Ahhh!

Step 4. The First Folds

With the outline of your cell phone pouch cut out, you will now need to make a 3/4″ lengthwise fold on both sides of your outline. Try to make both sides as even as possible, but a small difference will not cause any problems later on.

Make a fold on both sides

Step 5. It’s Time to Tape

Now that you have two folds along the sides of your outline, you will need to measure out strips of clear tape that are slightly longer than the length of your outline. Place these strips of tape sticky side up underneath the folds you made, and adhere the fold to the tape. Make sure to use tape wide enough that it will stick out along the fold, but not so wide that it will stick to the tape on the other side.

Don't let the tape touch!

Step 6. The Tongue

In this step we will be making the tongue or flap of the pouch which will hold the pouch closed. Start by cutting out a rough shape from another piece of newspaper. We found a fantastic sketch of a large fish, so try to find something equally awesome.  Fold the paper to form a point, and make sure to avoid crossing the paper on the back, it will cause difficulties later on. Once the point is formed, make a small incision which will be used as a buttonhole, and reinforce everything with tape. Take caution to avoid taping over the buttonhole you just worked so hard to form. Once everything is looking good, tape the tongue into the rest of the outline, leaving enough room for the flap to be properly closed.

Step 7. Fold Number 2

This is where things get a little tricky. You need to fold your outline in half so that the tape on each side folds back onto itself and sticks. Basically, you just fold everything in half hamburger style. We weren’t able to get a picture of the process, but try to figure out what happened by checking out what it should look like once the fold is completed.

Step 8. The Button

Now we need to make a spot for the button to be fixed, so make a small incision near the top of the pouch. To find the right placement, fold the flap down and make a mark where the buttonhole aligns with the pouch. Once you make the incision, push your button through this slit, and tape the fabric on which the button is sewn to the inside of the pouch. Once this is done, your pouch is ready to go!

Pull the button through and add tape to the inside

We’re Done!

With your new custom recycled cell phone pouch, you are ready to take on the world. This pouch isn’t guaranteed to protect your phone from drops, but it will make sure that keys in your purse or briefcase won’t scratch or damage your screen.

Test it out!
